The Afsluitdijk

The Afsluitdijk is a major dam in the Netherlands. It was constructed between 1927 and 1932. It runs from Den Oever in North Holland province to the village of Zurich in Friesland province over a length of 32 kilometers and a width of 90 meters at an initial height of 7.25 meters above the sea level.

On the 28th May 1932 the final gap in the dike was sealed. The Afsluitdijk was officially opened on 25 September 1933.

With this dam the so called "de Zuiderzee" became the "IJsselmeer". And salt water turned into fresh water. So it became the largest fresh water basin in Europe.
